I took my pup Marley to the river, although I brought my Flyrod, fishing was a not the primary objective but to hangout with my Australian Cow Dog or Queensland Heeler. I took her off her leash and she playfully stayed with me.

Where to Go Fly Fishing in the Texas Hill Country
Hatcheries in the area provide fishers with the chance to catch Rio Grande Perch and Guadalupe Bass, which are native to the region, as well as trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass, catfish, and more. Here are some of the best fishing hotspots in the Texas Hill Country!
1. Our Very Own Cypress Creek! | Wimberley
Cypress Creek is spring-fed, starting at Jacob’s Well and flowing into the Blanco River. This ensures a constant, dependable flow and a consistent habitat attractive to trout (and anglers!). Many sections of Cypress Creek are private, which means they are inaccessible or you will have to pay, but there are sections that are free to access.

The water is crystal clear, so it will be a challenge not to scare the fish! In addition to fishing from the shade of the banks, you can also try your hand at kayaking and fishing from there.

2. Blanco River | Blanco
Head to Blanco State Park for the best fishing along the Blanco River. You don’t need a license to fish from the shore at this beautiful park, and you can fish for largemouth and Guadalupe bass, channel catfish, sunfish, and rainbow trout. When available, you can even borrow rods and reels from the park.

3. Canyon Lake
There are several different parks by Canyon Lake where you can fish from the banks. Fish you’ll find here include largemouth, smallmouth, white, striped, and Guadalupe bass, and catfish. If you’d like to venture out onto the water and try your luck from a boat, there are a couple of different marinas on Canyon Lake where you can rent boats for the day.

4. Guadalupe River | Canyon Lake
The Guadalupe River is one of the most popular spots for fly fishing in the Texas Hill Country. This spot is ideal for catching brown or rainbow trout, and further along the river, you can catch Guadalupe bass, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, Rio Grande cichlid (the only kind of its species native to the U.S.), striped bass and white bass.

5. Pedernales River | Johnson City
The Pedernales River originates from springs in southeastern Kimble County and flows into the Colorado River after a little over 100 miles. As with other rivers in the Texas Hill Country, the Pedernales River can be prone to flash flooding, so it’s best to plan a bit ahead.

The best place to fish the Pedernales River is at Pedernales Falls State Park. Enjoy the scenery of cascading, sparkling water and exposed limestone as you cast your line for catfish, bass, sunfish, and carp.
