After four years of conflict, the major Confederate armies surrendered to the United States in April of 1865 at Appomattox Court House and Bennett Place. The war bankrupted much of the South, left its roads, farms, and factories in ruins, and all but wiped out an entire generation of men who wore the blue and the gray. The most-accepted estimate of casualties was 618,222 often cited, with 360,222 Union deaths and 258,000 Confederate deaths. The Civil War was the deadliest of all American wars.
