Performance Notes:

Ravel’s “Vocalise (En Forme de Habanera)”—also known as “Pièce en Forme de Habanera”—was originally commissioned in 1907 by A. L. Hettich, a voice teacher at the Conservatoire de Paris as a vocal study piece for his students. Since that time, it has found a place in many vocal performances and recordings, but also has been adopted by many instrumentalists. The music employs the common bass line of the traditional Spanish dance, but melodic line is rather vague and impressionistic. As such, the piece is not so much a literal dance as an interpretation of the dance.
The music is challenging technically, but even more so musically. The soloist must maintain phrases with a lot of rubato, as well as florid trills and scales superimposed over the repeated habanera rhythm. The ostinato rhythm may be stylized with the sixteenth-note coming slightly late, as suggested to the right.
A special note regarding the piano part: at bar 13 and later at bar 25, there is a marking “2 ped.” This refers to the una corda pedal (or soft pedal). This is the one located on the left of most modern pianos. In Ravel’s time, many pianos were not equipped with sostenuto pedal (which is in the middle of modern instruments), and so the two pedals available were the una corda (secondary) and damper (primary).
