Activists in Giza have returned to Egyptian tradition in order to raise awareness of the huge pollution problem facing the Nile river.

Taking plastic waste from the river and shaping it into bricks, the group have built a giant pyramid to stand as a visual reminder of the scale of the problem. Around 750,000 plastic bottles were used in total, with the resulting structure weighing in at a colossal seven and a half tonnes.

‘I feel so happy when I see the impact of what I did right away. When I’m in a place full of junk and suddenly it’s clean, I feel responsible and happy to do so,’ said one volunteer builder.
