The key conflict here is a role that serves internal and external customers. As an individual contributor, you may be able to work on internal teams, but this distracts from external business development activities.

It is a disservice to the company to play both roles, no matter your skill set. Being both an internal consultant and in sales distracts from sales opportunities. Finding problems is excellent, but solving them in client businesses is better.
