Toward a Social and Spiritual Ethic for the 21st Century: Enchanted Agnosticism

How much more evidence do we need that the conventional social and spiritual worldviews are corroding, rigidifying, and polarizing? Led by free market capitalism, materialism, and relativism, on the one hand, are religious zealotry, dogma, and fundamentalism, on the other, the world is ever nudging toward the precipice.
This talk presents an alternative to these increasingly paralytic worldviews--an ethical and spiritual perspective that I call "enchanted agnosticism." Enchanted agnosticism holds three basic tenets-that the source of the universe (e.g., God) is unknowable; that this unknowable is amazing and awe-inspiring, as well as daunting and overpowering; and that people need to respond to (i.e., take responsibility for), rather than react against this paradoxical condition. In the body of my talk, I will elaborate on the ethical implications of enchanted agnosticism for self, society, and spirit, and will draw upon concrete experiences of living to illustrate.

Educational Objectives:
1) Examine the spiritual perspective of “enchanted agnosticism”, as an alternative to the conventional social and spiritual worldviews.
2) Explore the ethical implications of enchanted agnosticism for self, society, and spirit.
