Typhoon Nanmadol downgraded to a tropical storm, 2 deaths, 9 million people told to evacuate

1. Typhoon Nanmadol was downgraded to a tropical storm on Monday after two people died and millions remain under an evacuation warning after the powerful storm slammed into the southwestern region of Kyushu the day before.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said some areas in the Miyazaki Prefecture saw more rain in the 24 hours after the storm hit than it has seen in all of September as river levels reached record highs.

The storm hit around Kagoshima, where the typhoon uprooted trees and smashed windows. The agency told residents to stay on alert for strong winds, mudslides and flooding.

Despite the typhoon being downgraded to a tropical storm, some areas are still seeing violent winds and pounding rainfall. Linear rain bands were expected to form in northern Kyushu as well as the Chugoku, Shikoku, Kinki and Tokai regions through Tuesday, creating additional flooding and landslides.

2. Powerful typhoon forecast to reach Tokyo on Tuesday.

A powerful typhoon slammed ashore in southern Japan on Sunday as it pounded the region with strong winds and heavy rain, causing blackouts, paralysing ground and air transportation and prompting the evacuation of thousands of people.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said Typhoon Nanmadol was heading north after making landfall in Kagoshima city on Japan's southern main island of Kyushu.

More than 12,000 people took shelter at evacuation centres. In neighbouring Miyazaki prefecture, about 8000 people left their homes.

Hundreds of domestic flights have been cancelled and more are planned to be grounded in western Japan through Tuesday as the typhoon headed northeast, according to Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways.

Public transportation including trains and buses in many areas on the Kyushu island were suspended throughout Sunday. Railway operators said bullet trains on Kyushu island also have been suspended, and more stoppages are expected in greater areas in the southwest on Monday.
