Let Go of Thought - Rumi Poem

How to stop overthinking is one of the biggest challenges we face in life.

We overthink everything, from our appearance and how people perceive us to the relationships we have and the careers we pursue.

But how do we actually stop overthinking? Is it all just endless meditation until the mind is quiet? Or is there something else we can do or embody to nurture a silent mind?

In this deep poem, Rumi tells us of another tool in our spiritual toolkit to calm our mind and raise our inner peace. He so eloquently describes the dangers of overthinking and offers a solution for anyone serious about traveling on the spiritual journey and raising their consciousness.

Let go of thought and bring it not into your heart,
for you are naked and thought is an icy wind.

You think in order to escape from torment and suffering,
but your thinking is torment’s fountainhead.

Know that the bazaar of God’s Making is outside of thought -
contemplate His effects, oh you who are dominated by fire!

Behold that Lane from which all forms are flying,
that Stream which turns the mill-wheel of the heavens.

That Rose-faced Beauty who makes the faces of the heart-ravishers like roses,
that Source of all temptations from whom lovers’ cheeks are inflamed!

These hundred thousand birds keep flying happily from Nonexistence,
these hundred thousand arrows keep streaming forth from one Bow.
