Situated in the oldest city within Las Almas, Mercado Las Almas — “Market of the Souls” — is one of the most revered and bustling marketplaces in Mexico.

For tourists, the market is a must-see stop on any tour, if only to buy a small trinket after visiting nearby mission churches. For locals, Mercado Las Almas is a weekly, if not daily, visit.

No other marketplace has dozens of vendors who seem to be as old as El Mercado itself. Handwoven tapestries, fresh produce, and toys are all sold at a discount to those who’ve visited here for decades.

They also know which stall among the dozens serve the best elotes and esquites — corn on or off the cob coated in spices such as chili and garlic along with a generous sprinkling of Cotija cheese — in the entire country. And, when the stalls close down, the bartenders at the Cantina are known to buy the first few rounds for all the vendors.
