The pigeon is a widespread bird of the pigeon family, whose homeland is considered to be Southern Europe, Southwest Asia and North Africa. Even in ancient times, these birds were tamed by man, as a result, the so-called domestic pigeons were bred. At the time of the Great Discoveries, a person carried with him all his property,
including pigeons. Subsequently, feral pigeons spread widely in the world and became synantrops, habitual inhabitants of cities and villages.
In the wild, the rock dove usually settles on coastal cliffs, in mountain gorges or along steep river banks, often near bushes or agricultural land.
Their semi-domestic descendants easily adapted to life near human habitation, since stone buildings resemble natural habitats, and food waste serves as a reliable food base at any time of the year. Despite early domestication and different habitat conditions, wild pigeons and their urban relatives freely interbreed with each other.
, which, according to ornithologists, can lead to degradation and gradual extinction of the former. In nature, birds usually live no more than three to five years, when bred at home, they often live up to 15 years of age, and some individuals up to 35 years.
