Third Quarter Half Moon

The moon takes 27.3 days to orbit the earth, but the full lunar cycle takes a full 29.5 days to complete (we are told). Throughout the cycle, the moon will be waxing each day, or increasing how much of it you can see lit up at night, then waning, or decreasing in size until it disappears.

(1) New moon starts at the beginning of each month, then (2) Waxing Crescent, (3) First quarter/Half-moon, (4) Waxing Gibbous, (5) Full moon at the middle of each month, then (6) Waning Gibbous, (7) Third quarter/Half-moon, (8) Waning crescent, and then the cycle begins again at the beginning of the next month.
