Professor Keith Kendrick: The Man With No Brain!

The 44-year-old man was a French civil servant in the tax office, with a wife and two children. He was not considered physically or mentally disabled and his development and his socialization were normal. The man had suffered from hydrocephalus (also known as "water on the brain") as a child, a condition in which an abnormal amount of cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain cavities, causing pressure inside the skull. To treat the condition, a valve had been inserted in his head to drain away the fluid when he was a six-month old baby, but it was removed when he was 14.

Professor Keith Kendrick here explains what is perhaps more interesting in this case: that seemingly any brain can operate in this normal way, even under such harsh conditions, if only it is given the time to adapt of its own accord.
The implications of this are pointed to, with suggestions of the possible directions that future neuroscience research might take, in the rest of his free public lecture on 'Future Brain'.
