In the highlands of central and western China, there is a species of bear called the Giant Panda. The Giant Panda, one of the most well-known and recognisable creatures in the world, is also one of the rarest and faces great danger in its native habitat, mostly due to habitat loss. The Giant Panda is distinct from other bears in that it does not hibernate, gives birth to relatively small cubs, and consumes a diet that is almost exclusively vegetarian. The World Wildlife Fund uses the Giant Panda as part of their emblem, making it an international symbol for conservation since it was first found by a French biologist in 1869. The Giant Panda is also viewed as a peace symbol by the Chinese people.
