Prostate enlargement is a common problem among older men. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is the medical term for it (BPH).
The urethra, the channel via which urine leaves the body, is surrounded by the prostate gland. The prostate enlargement causes urinary incontinence because it can compress or partially block the urethra.
Older men often suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia. About half of all men between the ages of 51 and 60 are affected by this illness. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the prevalence of BPH among men aged 80 and up is close to 90%.

Although problems from BPH can be life-threatening, the condition is not cancer and is typically associated with a man's natural ageing process. Researchers have looked into whether the hormonal changes and cell growth that men experience as they age may be linked to the development of BPH, but the reasons for BPH remain mostly unknown. Problems with the bladder, urinary tract, or kidneys might develop if BPH is not treated.
