ATN ThOR Thermal Scopes 384 vs 640

Before anyone flips out, the optic was not mounted on anything. This is just holding up the scope by hand.

Comparing $1700 with $2700, 384x240 with 640x480. ATN makes some very neat night vision and thermal gear. I think they have a better handle on how people actually use things for hunting than any other company in this market.

Keep in mind, I didn't compare the same magnification on the optical side, so just compare zoomed and unzoomed, but what you're looking at is how the pixellation changes. With the lower resolution camera it starts lousy and gets horrible. On the higher resolution camera it starts ok and just drops to so so. Clearly, for animal recognition either is sufficient at relatively short range, but you'd definitely need the higher resolution at anything further, or one with more optical magnification. Personally, I think it would be tough to argue that one isn't massively better, but if you're hunting hogs or even deer at short range even the cheaper option works well enough. There are significantly cheaper versions that work nearly as well as the 384, but don't record to SD cards so I couldn't get footage.

When considering the cost, keep in mind that these systems can save multiple zeros so you can swap between rifles without re-sighting in. The standard (non LT models) have microphones that do decently as well.
