Between Christmas 1941 and April 1, 1946, more than six million servicemen and women who traveled through Nebraska during World War II experienced the gratitude and support (and home-cooking) of the good people of America’s Heartland as they road the Union Pacific RR Line.
Shelton, Nebraska was obviously one of his favorites. And Doug Duncan, the local newspaper editor, one of his favorite people. Doug wrote,
``You know you're in a small town when you dial a wrong number and talk for 15 minutes anyway.''
