China President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have met for highly-anticipated talks in Uzbekistan, where they are attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. Mr. Putin thanked Mr. Xi for maintaining a balanced position on Ukraine, while Mr. Xi said Beijing will work with Moscow to assume the role of "great powers". Mr. Temur Umarov, a fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, shared his thoughts on China-Russia relations.
