What are Fractals? - Terence McKenna

Terence McKenna has long been interested in the fractal nature of things. They are not only found in maths, but in nature, and he believed in time too. This lecture explores his thoughts on the topic, and is set to unique fractal kaleidoscopes created especially for this video by me.

Fractals are never-ending patterns. They are infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar across different scales. They are created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop. Driven by recursion, fractals are images of dynamic systems – the pictures of Chaos. Geometrically, they exist in between our familiar dimensions. Fractal patterns are extremely familiar, since nature is full of fractals. For instance: trees, rivers, coastlines, mountains, clouds, seashells, hurricanes, etc.

Terence McKenna advocated the exploration of altered states of mind via the ingestion of naturally occurring psychedelic substances; for example, and in particular, as facilitated by the ingestion of high doses of psychedelic mushrooms, ayahuasca, and DMT, which he believed was the apotheosis of the psychedelic experience.
