Western Kentucky EF4 TORNADO AFTERMATH | Dawson Springs STORM RECOVERY

Nine months after the small town of Dawson Springs, Kentucky lost a third of its housing and industry to an EF4 tornado in December 2021, those fields of debris have transformed into fields of fresh green plants, marked by occasional new structures and the promise of a brighter future.

So it goes in the recovery phase of this ravaged town, where calm fields and open skies belie the loss of housing, industry and life that its citizens must face. With dogged determination, houses are starting to sprout anew or be rebuilt, one factory is set to reopen and services from banks to restaurants to medicine are making things work in repaired and reconstructed facilities. A new sweet shop offers a bright and fun new treat for a town that badly needs one!

The greater changes and challenges are upon the town now, and we talk about how community efforts to help and honor tornado victims continue. Grants and loans to keep schools running, restore century-old edifices and help rehouse those living in FEMA trailers are the town's current lifeblood; but to make a strong community in the long-term will take a new vision, and perhaps a change in focus while the town finds its new center.
