The Dutch Coin
During the 17th century, after the settlement of Jamestown, the colonists traded with Dutch ships. The reason is they avoided the English tax and high prices. For example, nails were the most expensive commodity to be shipped to the Virginia Colony. Colonists took to saving and re-using everything. Finally, the English passed a law that the colonists could not trade with the Dutch. From the English standpoint, however, one must consider that the crown helped to finance the colony and wished to profit on the subsequent trade.
