This is why your vet hates raw

Most vets hate raw just because they don't understand it. There is a lot of misinformation and brainwashing we have to undo.

All vets will agree that cats are obligate carnivores.

So why do they recommend crunchy, dried cereal cat food?

Well, veterinarians are not nutritionists. They are medical doctors.

We need to keep in mind that vets are medical doctors.

Vets have to study:
Biology
Toxicology
Radiology
Pharmaceutical drugs
Surgery
Anatomy
Immunology
Pathology
Physiology
Parasitology
Genetics
Pathophysiology

And the list goes on.

And not just for cats and dogs! They have to study livestock animals too like chickens, pigs, and cows. Plus sometimes birds, horses, rabbits, and even reptiles.

We can't possibly expect them to be nutritionists as well.

In fact, if they want to become a nutritionist that's extra schooling on top of their DVM.

So how do they know which food to recommend?

They rely on the pet food companies to tell them what's good.

And, unfortunately, the multi-billion dollar kibble industry has a massive influence on veterinarians.

2 major kibble companies are diamond and silver-level sponsors of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

All vets (in the US) follow AV guidelines.

The AV also advises against feeding raw.

So of course they are going to recommend the brands that fund the AV. And advise against raw feeding.

Another issue vets have with raw is there is a lot of education and research that has to be done.

You go to the vet for a 15-minute appointment to talk about your cat's medical history and wellness plan.

That's not enough time to also cover where to source ingredients, which recipe to use, or which brand to use, how to read pet food labels, how to properly store it, handle it, and serve it.

These vets also see the negative effects of unbalanced raw diets and that tarnishes their view.

But frankly, I think the time investment is worth it.

Also, just take a step back and realize, that no other health professional would ever recommend an overly processed, dry diet to anyone.
