Taking the lead role of Ariel is Halle Bailey who confirmed in July 2021 that production had completed on Disney's latest reimagining, sharing a first-look at her as Ariel in The Little Mermaid to mark the occasion.

After auditioning for this film when I was 18 just about to turn 19, to now finishing filming through a pandemic when I turned 21," she wrote on Twitter. "We have finally made it... I feel so grateful to have experienced this film in all of its glory."

The Little Mermaid will swim into cinemas on May 26, 2023, with a Disney+ release likely to follow once its exclusive theatrical window is up (usually 45 days from its release).
