The Enemy of Truth

Track 5 from "Living in Reality":

Opened up the paper yesterday,
I spent all afternoon trying to find just one thing
that rang true

Everything's editorialized,
Hyperbolized, or just pure fucking lies,
They're manipulating you

Closed down the shop the other day,
Can't find no customers when
everybody's locked down and afraid

We've all got bills going unpaid,
But they're still propping up the politician
liars on TV….

But what about you and me?

Whatever happened to the radio?
I remember not long ago
when everybody had a memory
and the media wasn't an enemy
of truth

What happened to the magazines?
And what the hell's on my movie screen?
Propaganda everywhere,
and everyone is raining lies on you

Back in my class at 10 years old,
Teacher's preaching 'bout the ozone hole,
and claiming that the planet got too cold

I read a book at 17,
Guess they couldn't keep the story straight,
Now they say "we're turning up the heat"

Watched a film at 25,
Tried to tell me that the ice was melting,
That the end was surely nigh

It seems that somehow we survived
Just like that filmmaker
Lying in his beachfront mansion every night….

Doesn't seem right.

What ever happened to the history books?
I remember how good it looked
When everybody had a memory
and the teacher wasn't the enemy
of youth

What happened to the scientists?
Is this really how good it gets?
Propaganda everywhere,
and everyone is raining lies on you

Some thug got shot the other day,
He had the right skin color so some editor
is cracking a big grin

He had a pistol in his hand,
Gunned down robbing a liquor store,
but the newspaper says he was some great man

They'll torch your city in a blaze,
Make sure you take a knee or they'll
peacefully throw a brick right through your face

Watch your whole world go up in flames,
Don't reach for the law to save you,
They've already been replaced

Just like you and me

What ever happened to society?
I remember community with-
out plastic animosity
and your neighbor wasn't an enemy
to you

What happened to reality?
Remember objectivity?
Propaganda everywhere
and everyone is raining lies on you

What happened to America,
I remember a city on a hill,
When the future looked so bright
Before everything went straight to Hell

What happened to the world today?
I remember a human race,
When mankind was a family
And not another animal to cull!
