Review : Don't buy the aluminum version! Get this one!

"This is actually kind of impressive. I wasn't sure what to expect, since WEN seems to vary quite a bit in build quality, but this turned out to be a good one. I almost bought the aluminum version since it'd arrive sooner, but I'm glad I didn't.

If you're not very familiar with machine tools, you will be well served by remembering that cast iron is the superior metal for anything that vibrates. It has a unique microscopic structure where the carbon has precipitated out and formed into graphite flakes. Graphite is an extremely good dry lubricant. This means that the crystals can slide past each other slightly, and that means that a sound wave traveling through the material ends up being absorbed rather quickly. This is awful for an anvil, but for something that's supposed to not move when there's a cutting tool attached chopping away at something, it's excellent. Cast iron is also much stiffer than aluminum.

Since a jointer is about as close as woodworkers get to precision, this is actually important here."

Review : Great after adjustment

"I set this jointer up, impressed with it's quality, and ran some boards through it for a tabletop glue-up. Every board came out bowed, leaving a 1/16" gap in the middle of each joint (ends of 48" boards touching). I set the dept of cut to zero and checked the infeed table with a straight edge -- it was off by about 1/32". To remedy this, you must (1) read the manual, and (2) remove the bottom of the jointer, (3) release the clamp screws for the infeed table, (4) adjust the set screws, (5) check for co-planar alignment, (6) readjust set screws until aligned, (7) tighten the clamp screws, and (8) reinstall the bottom. Once done, it works great! It was satisfying to hear the machine correcting its previous mistakes as I ran the same boards through. In all, can't be beat for the money. I would buy again. Oh, and youtube helps in understanding jointer alignment in general."
