Fatwood and Fire Science | TJack Survival

In this series, Tyler is focusing on fire, water, shelter, food, medical communications, and the ability to replenish it. And in his hike along Elk hunting, he comes across some fatwood ー a helpful material that could help get fire started for any camper, any day.

Fatwood is a highly resinous wood that can be found wherever a tree gets knocked over by wind, and lightning. Cutting through the bark to get through the fatwood is similar to how cutting fiberglass feels; viscous and sticky.

It is important to note that the bark of these trees is resistant to fire, but it just resists fire. So if it's starting to rain or you need that fire to go well, you should dump this big chunk of pitch wood into that fire with the core facing the fire. Even the rain and the and the water is not going to put it out within reason

Fire starts out essentially as a spark. There's got to be something that ignites it. One way to test this is to run your fingers over a flame and try to pick up a coal. Coal is hotter than a flame, so the flame is drying out the material around it.

When you hit that lighter to your fatwood and you start to see smoke, a large portion of that smoke is just water vapor leaving the stick. If you're going to make a fire, use fuel the diameter of your forearm and the length of your arm. As the tip starts to burn, tilt it so that it walks up the log; if you leave it level, it'll just burn straight down.

Your tinder can be something like this: if you take a bundle of some plant-based martial together, or maybe some tamarack or some sort of bush, you can get all of these little sticks that are matchstick size. This helps you prepare pitchwood for the next time you need it.
