Footing Clean Up | Day 2 | Forest to Farm

This episode takes off from Footings Clean Up Day 1. Today, Brian and Terry continue to clean up the footings and foundation. This time, with a tractor.

Most of this video shows a timelapse of the forest to farm crew getting the job done.

It’s with small jobs like these where the tractor starts paying off. Of course, you could get all the dirt hauled out with a wheelbarrow, but that would have been some work. But with a tractor, all you have to do is get out there and drop the bucket down, float it, then scoop the dirt up—fun, quick, and easy stuff.

Before you even start doing something like clearing a whole forest, the tractor is one of those tools you have to get--if you can afford it. You can rent equipment, but rental can get expensive. You can accumulate a lot of work then rent and repeat, but it’s always better not to keep that dirt piled up.

It’s good to save up on getting one of your own. Even an old tractor with a bucket can save your back and your life.

Brian and Terry spent two years clearing the forest by hand and loading logs in the back of their truck before they got the tractor. These logs were from hundred-something-foot tall trees that were three feet in diameter in the bottom. The crew had to cut up little bitty wedges from the logs to load them by hand. Not fun. It wears you out.

So our biggest takeaway on this: get a tractor. It’s one of the handiest tools you can get hands down. It gets a lot of heavy work done.

In the coming episodes, the crew will start fixing these horrible foundations or footings. This will be a task for sure, but it’s one step closer to getting that dream house built.
