I made this back in November when I picked up this GEOBIN from the cooperative extension office. This bin was offered in conjunction with Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DWSA) for $20.

I layered the bin starting with browns, greens, and a little compost. I watered in each layer to help give moisture to the bacteria so the pile could start breaking down. I used the PVC pipe to allow air to get into the middle of the pile so I didn’t need to be concerned with flipping like a hot compost pile. I’ve been adding food scrapes into this bin which allows worms to populate the bin and help to breakdown the grass and pine needles more thoroughly.

Browns I used were pine needles and leaves
Greens I used were grass clippings and fresh trimmings from a bush

I recently had a soil sample taken and the garden pH was neutral (7), there has been pine trees next to the garden for almost 35 years and the soil is not acidic for the pine needles. That is what is great about composting pine needles they do not affect the soil. Plus I have a lot on hand so it’s inexpensive to do.
