Episode 5 – Swamp Castles and Skunk Apes
On this week’s “Eerie Travels,” we visit the creations of two mad geniuses that turned Florida swampland into towering castles that draw tourists from all over the world. Neither of them is named Walt!
We first visit Solomon’s Castle in Ona, Florida. Built by Howard Solomon out of recycled materials, this shining castle is filled with works of art from the great man. He even built a boat and a lighthouse to go next to his swamp castle.
Next, we travel to Homestead, Florida to the mysterious Coral Castle. Built by Edward Leedskalnin, a small man of just over 5 feet in height and weighing less than 100 lbs, Coral Castle is made of giant cut coral cement blocks that boggle the mind in size and scope. Some of the stones are bigger than the rocks of Stonehenge. How did one man build such an amazing structure all by himself?
Our Eerie Destination for the week is the “Skunk Ape Research Headquarters” in Ochopee, Florida. Come and explore this amazing campground/gift shop/animal sanctuary in the heart of the Everglades run by Florida Bigfoot expert, Dave Shealy.
