Earlier this year, one of our airport supervisors encountered a young man working at the airport as part of the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program, who appeared to be having some type of conflict. The young man was determined to walk out the door and leave the employment program.

Sergeant Kornbacher stopped what he was doing to go over to the young man and started a conversation. He immediately took on a mentor role as he asked key questions and talked the young person through the immediate crisis by sharing relatable stories, providing wise counsel regarding choices, and suggestions on how to deal with life’s difficult moments.

The sergeant convinced the young man to stay in the program. He also began meeting with him regularly, to offer guidance, and be that voice of reason and support that we all need at times.

Investing in our youth is one of the most important things we must do to make our city and this world a better place. This is just one example of the opportunities we have to make a difference during programs like this. We are proud of Sergeant Kornbacher for his willingness to share his own experiences and his time.

We are hopeful his efforts will have a long-lasting impact on this young man’s life
