Is whale watching bad for whales?
The aspects of sustainability must be carefully evaluated: the so-called eco-tourism (ie dedicated to natural and environmental aspects) is not always respectful of the environment. Like any large-scale human activity, whale watching also has an impact on the environment. Thirteen million people take a whale watching tour every year. On the one hand this activity allows people to learn more about the marine world and provides more sustainable alternatives to whale hunting in some countries where it is still practiced, on the other hand studies on the effects of whale watching seem to show that in some areas cetaceans have manifested signs of stress due to the constant presence of boats.
