Surviving San Gorgonio 2022 | Tallest Peak in Southern California

A solo overnight backpack which includes summiting San Gorgonio Mountain. The trip started at the South Fork trailhead where I hiked to Dry Lake, set-up camp, and stopped for the night. I started the roughly 6-mile hike around 4:00 pm and made it to Dry Lake just after dark. I was much too tired and chilled to make my way to Lodgepole Spring to fetch water for my evening dinner and morning breakfast. I believe I ate a Snickers bar for dinner.

To my frustration the next morning, I discovered that the spring was not running. So, I made a half mile walk down trail to see if I’d be successful in gathering water from an unnamed trickled just off trail that I’ve seen in the past. Thank goodness there was water at this location, otherwise I would have abandoned my attempt to reach San Gorgonio summit on this trip.
With plenty of water and food, I finally made my way to the summit starting around 10:30 am. It was a long, but enjoyable day.

I highly recommend this trip, but keep in mind you will need to obtain a permit before hitting the trail. For overnight permits, reserve through the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association.

San Gorgonio Mountain, also known locally as Mount San Gorgonio, or Old Greyback, is the highest peak in Southern California and the Transverse Ranges at 11,503 feet (3,506 m).
