Today on the Drive Channel Heel and toe Downshifting. What is it and what I had to do to this car to make it easier.

If you like this type of content you might know about and practice heel-toe downshifting so this is primarily for the newly minted enthusiast. (I’m so proud of you)

So what is it? Heel and toe simply refers to the act of blipping the throttle to match revs during downshifting while simultaneously braking. Done right, the revs are nicely matched and the brake pressure is even beginning-to-end.

Why is it called “heel and toe” when it does not involve your heel? Way back it the very old days of racing when this technique was invented, most cars had a floor mounted gas peddle it was typically round and in some cars center located between the brake and clutch.

So where to begin? Let’s start with the pedals. How many pedals does a manual car have? Wrong! Actually it has 4. Gas, Brake, Clutch and Dead peddles. Some people particularly in the states call this a foot rest. To be fair, in a non sporting car equipped with an automatic transmission, that’s all it is.
