The Ukrainian Armed Forces announced that 20 settlements were captured in the Kharkov region and an attempt was made to infiltrate Russian defense positions up to 50 kilometers in some areas. Trying to infiltrate Russian-controlled areas, the Ukrainian Army destroyed a large number of Russian vehicles and targets.

There are about 20,000 Russian soldiers in the region. More Russian troops are also expected to be sent to the region following the Ukrainian attacks. According to the 2006 census, 1,461,300 people live in Kharkov, Ukraine's second largest city, located in the northeast of the country. With the occupation of the region by the Russians, the majority of the people living here had to leave their cities.
