Violent carjacking suspect arrested by Atlanta police after a PIT maneuver
Auto Crimes Enforcement Unit (A.C.E.) officers spend countless hours responding to auto theft calls, investigating auto crimes, and tracking and arresting car thieves. Each time this team arrests a carjacking suspect locates a citizen’s stolen vehicle and takes these suspects to jail; our city is safer. The PIT maneuver performed by Officer T. Griffie stopped this violent and reckless suspect in his tracks. On August 30, 2022, Atlanta police responded to a carjacking at 1999 Bent Creek Way SW.
Upon arrival, officers met with the victim who stated she was physically thrown from a vehicle by a black male and he then fled the scene in her stolen vehicle. Moments later, another carjacking call came up approximately 3 miles away where the victim was forcibly removed from her vehicle as well. This time, while attempting to flee the scene, the suspect struck the victim and her father who was trying to protect his daughter. They both sustained minor injuries. Officers learned the description of the suspect matched the same suspect in the earlier carjacking.
During this time, a city-wide lookout was given for the second victim’s vehicle, a maroon Volkswagen Passat. The vehicle was being tracked to the area of I-285 NB and South Cobb. A.C.E officers were granted permission from their supervisor to go out of jurisdiction and head to the area to canvass for the carjacked vehicle. While doing so, an updated location of the carjacked vehicle was provided and A.C.E. officers headed towards Norcross, Ga. where they observed a vehicle that matched the description of the stolen vehicle, stopped at the intersection of Graves Rd at Osborne Dr.
A.C.E. officers activated their blue emergency lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle, however, the driver refused to comply and fled the scene at a high rate of speed. A.C.E. officers pursued the vehicle and were eventually able to perform a successful P.I.T. maneuver in the area of I-85 NB and I-985. With assistance from Gwinnett PD, A.C.E. officers were able to take the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Brian Warren, into custody without incident.
He was charged with two counts of Hijacking of a motor vehicle, two counts of Battery, three counts of Aggravated Assault, and three counts of Robbery. We applaud the precision, determination, and professionalism of Officer T. Griffie, the entire A.C.E. team, and everyone involved in safely apprehending this dangerous suspect. Job well done! Atlanta is safer with this criminal behind bars.
