In April 2020, the Irish Government published its findings on vitamin D deficiency in Ireland.

In an offical cross party report, published by the Joint Oireachtas Committee for Health, recommendations were made that ‘every adult in Ireland should take vitamin D supplements’. There was an urgency to all of this due to the pandemic underway at the time and because Irish government funded scientific research had just shown that Vitamin D deficiency was linked to worse health outcomes for Covid-19.

The Committee’s report made four recommendations, with the main one being that daily Vitamin D supplementation of 20-25µg/day should be recommended to the entire adult population as a public health measure, with higher doses recommended for vulnerable groups under medical supervision” AND “that specific measures need to be put in place for vulnerable groups, and for frontline and healthcare workers, so that Vitamin D supplementation is administered on an opt-out basis, and for the duration of this pandemic, people should be offered Vitamin D supplements when presenting at Covid-19 test centres.”

However, when Dr. Ronan Glynn (Deputy CMO and Vice Chair of NPHET) was asked about Vitamin D a year later, his response did not include an acknowledgement of the government report, published over a year previously.

VITAMIN D – FACTS

* Every Cell in our body has a vitamin D receptor in the nucleus.
* Approx 2,000 genes in our body (5% of our genome) are controlled by Vitamin D
* Vitamin D is the master key to our immune health.
* If one has a D level of 50ng/ml (range 20-100) you cannot develop a ‘cytokine storm’

VITAMIN D - STATS

* 70% of the world is deficient in Vit D.
* 80+% and 96% if ICU patients are Vitamin D deficient!
* D deficiency = Immune suppression/dysregulation

Dr. Cole advises Irish people to read the JCOH report and to ask their local representatives why Government funded scientific research, which caused excitement around the world when it emerged, was ignored during the height of the Corona virus pandemic.
