Pirith refers to the Sinhala word for paritta. (in Pali), which means protection. "It protects you at all times.", is the traditional definition. This is often called the recitative of the Dharma.
Paritta in Pali or Pirith in Sinhala refers to a practice that comes from the times of Buddha. Once when there was a disastrous situation to a once beautiful city (like New York today) called Visala, it was Buddha who advised maha Sanga (Bikkus) to chant pirith and spread holy water (Pirith Pan) through out the city. Pirith is the truthful words. That truth carries such a power that can change the molecular structure of water (search google to see pictures). Pirith helped to ward off evil fortune or dangerous conditions. Pirith chanting helped shielding from various forms of evil spirits, misfortune, sickness and influence of the planetary systems as well as instilling confidence in the mind. The vibrant sound of the chanting creates a very pleasing atmosphere for listeners of human and non human beings. The rhythm of the chanting is also important.

පාලියෙන් පරිත්ත හෝ සිංහලෙන් පිරිත් යන්නෙන් අදහස් කරන්නේ බුද්ධ කාලයේ සිට පැවත එන පිළිවෙතකි. වරක් විසාලා නම් සුන්දර නගරයකට (අද නිව් යෝර්ක් වැනි) විපත්තිදායක තත්වයක් ඇති වූ විට, පිරිත් සජ්ඣායනා කිරීමටත්, ශුද්ධ වූ පැන් (පිරිත් පැන්) නගරය පුරා පැතිරවීමටත් මහා සංඝරත්නයට (භික්ෂුන්ට) උපදෙස් දුන්නේ බුදුන් වහන්සේ ය. පිරිත් යනු සත්‍ය වචන ය. එම සත්‍යය ජලයේ අණුක ව්‍යුහය වෙනස් කළ හැකි එවැනි බලයක් දරයි . අවාසනාවන්ත හෝ අනතුරුදායක තත්ත්වයන් මඟහරවා ගැනීමට පිරිත උපකාර විය. පිරිත් සජ්ඣායනය විවිධ ආකාරයේ අශුද්ධාත්ම, අවාසනාව, ලෙඩ රෝග සහ ග්‍රහ මණ්ඩලයේ බලපෑමෙන් ආරක්ෂා වීමට මෙන්ම මනස තුළ විශ්වාසය ඇති කිරීමට උපකාරී විය. සජ්ඣායනාවේ විචිත්‍රවත් ශබ්දය මිනිසුන්ගේ සහ මිනිසුන්ගේ ශ්‍රාවකයන්ට ඉතා ප්‍රසන්න වාතාවරණයක් නිර්මාණය කරයි. ගායනයේ රිද්මය ද වැදගත් ය.
