Turmeric

This one is going to be a bit different. I have looked in all my books, scoured the interwebs and have found very little on the magical properties of Turmeric. Most of the information out there is about the medicinal uses for this amazing root. And they are plentiful. Currently I do grow Turmeric in my garden however where I am at this is not going to be a perennial.

If we look at the color of Turmeric and its origins, mainly in China and India, and how the cultures have used the plant (I won’t go to much into detail as I really don’t want to make any ancient gods or goddesses angry by getting something wrong) I will go with my instinct on how we can use this herb in our own craft.

Turmeric is something that most of us have in our kitchens, it is just one of those herbs you see in the store and grab because most people have this in the kitchen. But what we don’t realize when we grab it is that it is not only a very strong herbal remedy, but so much more.

In history one of the many cultures who used and loved this herb worshiped the solar system and the Sun as a Diety. So we can safely assume that the God/Goddess would be a Sun Deity, I would also think since this herb is yellow, and from cultures that worshiped a Sun Deity that its element would be fire. And if you are of Irish/Scottish/ and Nordic descent like I am, then it might also be a bit hot in the food. (Yes, I am not a set my mouth on fire type of person). So if the element is fire, I would assume the herb itself would fall in the Masculine Category.

What does the Sun and Fire make us think about, well for me it is Cleansing, Passion, Strength, Retribution, Protection, Power. Many useful things.

From here how can we use this in our homes for some simple witchcraft? Because you know we don’t really need to make everything super difficult and time consuming right?!?

If you have a set sacred space in your home (Maybe it is even your kitchen) you can sprinkle turmeric around the area for some added protection. If you are going into what could be a dangerous spiritual situation then you can wear a piece that has been blessed or spelled for protection around your neck or in your pocket.

It can be used in a cleansing ritual to help clear out your chakras. It could be used to call on sun deities for ritual. You can use it as a protective stain on your Book of Shadows, and on this note I would not put this into a ritual bath or at least not a lot of it, as it is used to stain clothing, and other things, and will also give your skin a yellow tint, which could possibly be a little distracting. Though I do use this in a paste for the dark circles under my eyes as the yellow counteracts the darkness.

I hope this has helped with how we can use herbs with little information to help us in our spiritual journeys, and has opened eyes on knowing that we don’t always have to be told what something can do. We are very capable beings who are able to trust our instinct and understand that within nature is a world of magic that helps our souls to sing.
