Why did Jesus plan to set a man against his family members? (Matthew 10:34-36)

Matthew 10:34-36 contains certain statements of Christ that at first glance may seem a little weird. Christ said he didn't come to bring peace, but instead a sword, so that he could set people against one another.

Why would Christ want to cause conflict instead of peace? We call him the "Prince of Peace" often; why then would he say that?

Or could it mean something different?
