The Russian Spetsnaz, or Alpha Group is an elite, stand-alone sub-unit of Russian's special forces. Its official name is Directorate "A" of the FSB Special Purpose Center. It is a Russian Federal Security Service counter-terrorism task force that primarily prevents and responds to violent acts in public transportation and buildings and in the war, created by the Soviet KGB in 1974.
The GRU's special forces, or Spetsnaz, are the foreign military intelligence agency of the Russian Federation's Armed Forces. The first Spetsnaz force in the Soviet Union was formed in 1949 as the military force of the Main Intelligence Directorate, the Soviet Armed Forces' foreign military intelligence agency.
During the Cold War, the force was created to conduct reconnaissance and sabotage against enemy targets using special reconnaissance and direct action attacks. Additional Spetsnaz forces attached to other Soviet intelligence agencies, such as the Vympel and Alpha Group of the KGB, were inspired by the Spetsnaz GRU.
Weapons handling, fast rappelling, explosives training, marksmanship, underwater combat, counter-terrorism, airborne training, hand-to-hand combat, climbing, diving, emergency medical training, and demolition were all part of the Spetsnaz GRU's training.
