Rotating outages 'could be imminent' as demand on California's energy grid remains high

California is at a high risk of rolling outages on Tuesday, the state's grid operator said, citing an extremely strained power grid from people increasing energy use. KCRA reported.

By Tuesday afternoon, California’s grid operator was warning that electricity supplies would be so tight by 5:30 p.m. that the state could reach its highest stage power emergency when rotating outages — rolling blackouts — are imminent. The Mercury News reported.

As people crank up their air conditioners, the state forecasted record levels of energy use, said Elliot Mainzer, president of California Independent System Operators, which runs the state’s electrical grid. The state has additional energy capacity at the moment “but blackouts, rolling, rotating outages are a possibility,” Mainzer said, calling additional conservation “absolutely essential.” The Associated Press is reporting.
