Religious Discourse in Psychotherapy: Thick and thin

Religious language in psychotherapy has been the occasion of much concern in the modern world. On the one hand there are those who argue vigorously for its presence while other argue just as strongly for its exclusion. This paper will explore the role of religion in therapy from a cross-cultural perspective. We will assert that religion is like ethnicity, a social phenomenon. The religious client, like has the right to have his or her religion respected, validated, affirmed and resourced in the process of healing.
It is difficult to understand why psychotherapists ignore religion in therapy when many of their clients are religious, view their problems in religious terms, and find their faith a source of strength. Failure on the part of the therapist to validate the religious tradition of the client may undermine clinician/client alliance, diminish the client’s willingness to disclose deeper issues of significance, increase absenteeism, premature termination and generalized resistance.

This paper will explore concrete ways in which the therapist can appropriately address religious issues and create an ethos in which clients feel the freedom to use religious language. In particular we will outline steps in assessment and treatment that are ethically sensitive.

Educational Objectives:
1) Explore the role of religion in therapy from a cross-cultural perspective. 2) Learn ways in which religion can be appropriately addressed in psychotherapy.
