The reasons that led to the revolt and the abandonment of the executive by the Rajapaksa family must be carefully sought among medium and long-term economic and social causes. First of all, it must be emphasized that the revolt cannot be compared to a political revolution but a spontaneous popular upheaval caused by the ruinous and contingent economic conditions of Sri Lanka. These conditions have manifested themselves, it is true, in these first months of 2022 but they have their roots in the history of the country, starting from its decolonization, through the civil war.
