6.8 Earthquake in China's Sichuan kills more than 30, shakes provincial capital

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck China's Sichuan province on Monday, the strongest to hit the region since 2017, killing more than 30 people and shaking the provincial capital of Chengdu and more distant provinces. Reuters is reporting.Show more

The quake's epicenter was about 43 kilometers (27 miles) southeast of Kangding, a city of around 100,000 people, according to the USGS. CNN reported.

Tremors also shook buildings in the Sichuan provincial capital of Chengdu and the nearby city of Chongqing. The Guardian reported.

Elsewhere, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck southern Iran on Monday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said. Reuters Reported.

Also in Afghanistan a 5.3 magnitude earthquake killed eight people after it struck near the eastern city of Jalalabad. The Jerusalem Post is reporting.
