Tory leadership contender and Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak recently said the government gave too much power to scientists and that they were not honest with the public.

He told the Spectator that negative impacts of lockdowns on society were "never part" of internal discussions. Ministers were ordered not to discuss the potential downsides in interviews, he added.

"The script was not to ever acknowledge them. The script was: 'Oh there's no trade-off, because doing this for our health is good for the economy.'"

He made an "emotional" plea to keep schools open, but said he was met with "a big silence."

Sunak also confessed it was "wrong to scare people" with posters of COVID-19 patients on ventilators.
