Are Sodas Really Bad for You?? How Soft Drinks Affect Weight Loss
Are soft drinks, sodas, and sweetened drinks really all that bad for you? How do sodas affect your weight loss and weight gain. First of all, sodas have absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever. So, for all the problems they cause, you have nothing good to gain from them. If an average person only drank one 16 ounce soft drink a day, that would yield about 200 additional calories each day. Over the course of a year that yields over 70,000 additional calories. If you are one to follow calorie counting and weight loss formulas, that would yield an additional weight gain of 15-20 pounds in a single year. All from one soda. Of course the reverse is true also. Eliminating one soft drink each day from your normal routing can yield a 10-20 pound weight loss in the course of a year. Now imagine if you normally drink 2-4 of these things a day. The results of quitting can have enormous benefits. Imagine being on a weight loss program that doesn't require exercise or changing eating habits. That is exactly what you have. To give you an idea of how much sugar these things have, they average about 10 tsps. of sugar each. To put that into perspective, the next time you eat cheerios for breakfast, try adding 10 tsp of sugar to the mix and see how is goes. That is exactly what you get from one soft drink. But, it isn't all about calories. It is also about the way the sugar hits your blood stream. Instead of digesting slowly throughout the day, the soft drinks sugar hits the blood stream immediately causing a sudden sugar spike. The body counters this by creating a corresponding insulin spike. The insulin begins turning the sugar into fat. This results in a sudden drop in blood sugar. It is called a sugar crash. Your brain interprets the sudden reduction in sugar levels as starvation and triggers sugar cravings and hunger cravings. But, it gets worse. Most sodas contain high fructose corn syrup. This stuff isn't really sugar and has to be processed thought the liver. This has shown to cause liver damage over time. Diet drinks aren't the answer. The sodas still have no nutritional value and are very acidic which causes calcium to be leached from the bones. Can you say osteoporosis. In addition, the artificial sweeteners have been linked to kidney disease, neurological disorders, vertigo, and heart disease. They don't even hydrate you because most have caffeine which is a diuretic. Lastly, the diet drinks still trigger the insulin response which triggers hunger and sugar cravings. The best solution is to drink only water, unsweet tea, and occasional coffee. You may use stevia as a sweetener if you like. Many people have lost weight just giving up Diet drinks. The good news is, after 2-3 months, you will no longer crave the soft drinks and you will be losing weight with no effort what so ever.
