Top reviews from the United States

"Pros were recommending belt sanding as the best way to really prep a deck for refinishing, so after reading lots of reviews, I chose this sander. It really does a fantastic job, and it's taking the old product off my large deck as quickly as I could hope, but there is a learning curve. It's a bit heavy, so it takes your shoulders a while to adjust. I recommend that if you buy this sander that you take some time to get the feel of how it works and what it can or can't do. If you have a perfectly flat surface, you're in like Flynn! Once you get used to the machine, you'll be very happy with it. It's doing a fantastic job for me! Very pleased with my Makita sander!
As with other reviewers, I must also say that the dust bag is only useful for very small jobs. It fills up quickly, and you have to pause often to empty the bag. I followed the advice of other reviewers and hooked the sander to my shop vac instead! Makita, for whatever reason, made the exhaust port the exact same size as most shop vac hose ends, except - perhaps, for Makita shop vacs?? Whatever, I cut off a shop vac extension about two inches at the large end and used it for an adapter. Works great!"

"I was redoing a large wooden deck project and wanted a large, good quality belt sander to try and sand down some of the existing boards that still had some life left. After a lot of research, I settled on this Makita model due to the reviews and the reputation of Makita (I have their circular saw that has been the top rated saw in the industry for many years running). Even though the price was high, I figured I'd get what I paid for. With winter approaching, I was pressed to get to use it but finally thought I'd better try it out and see what it would do....more excited than anything. I was greatly disappointed when the sander seemed to be struggling to do a basic surface sanding job and then in about 2 minutes of use, a loud screeching sound started coming from what I guessed to be the front tracking roller on the belt. There I sat, less than 3 minutes into using my new top rated, top-of-the-line, $250.00+ belt sander it was a PEACE-OF-JUNK. Shame on you Makita! I was going to call Makita's customer service and discuss this with them, but haven't found the time to do that. I was going to just return it to Amazon, but now the window for return has closed. Now, I'm out all this money without a tool to do the job that I purchased it for. I'm still intending to get in touch with Makita and give them an ear full. I contemplated a long time between the 9404 and the 9403. I wished I'd gone with my first inclination and gotten the more powerful 9403 (11amp). The 9404 is just underpowered with its 8.8amp motor. I see where the price has decreased on the 9404 almost 20% in 3 months. I guess Makita has realized they have under-designed their "newer" and "better" class model. Very disappointed customer!"
