Astaxanthin is classified as a xanthophyll carotenoid, which is carotenoid pigment synthesized by a number of bacteria, microalgae, and yeast. Astaxanthin is ubiquitous in nature, also found as a red-orange pigment in many aquatic animals such as salmonids, shrimp, and crayfish. Due to its unique molecular structure and chemical properties, Astaxanthin has particularly unique features that explain its benefits in human health, particularly its antioxidant activity. Astaxanthin has a higher antioxidant activity than other carotenoids, like zeaxanthin, lutein, and beta-carotene. Aside from its potent antioxidant activity, astaxanthin has been shown to have a variety of potential pharmacological effects, including anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities, neuro-cardiovascular, ocular, and skin-protective effects. In particular, astaxanthin preserves skin health because of its ability to inhibit reactive oxygen species formation. ROS formation damages the DNA alters inflammatory response, reduces antioxidant production, and leads to the generation of matrix metalloproteinases that degrade collagen and elastin in the dermal skin layer. Clinical studies have proven that long-term treatment of astaxanthin prevents inflammation-mediated skin deterioration, such as wrinkle formation and skin moisture decline, that appear in aged skin. Astaxanthin may also have protective effects against diabetes by lowering a variety of risk factors associated with the disease. Supplementing with 8mg of Astaxanthin every
day improves insulin sensitivity, significantly increases HDL cholesterol concentration, and lowers blood pressure. Astaxanthin also offers effective protection for the eyes due to its ability to neutralize reactive oxygen species. Several recent clinical studies have shown that Astaxanthin supplementation has significantly improved various ocular diseases including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataract. It's important to talk to your doctor or other professional before beginning any sort of supplementation or treatments.
