In the 1960s, British researchers at a facility in Chobham developed a new type of composite armor, one that would eventually prove effective against explosive warheads. As successful as it was in its initial trials, however, it needed to be fitted to a vehicle for a true test. The vehicle designed to use this new “Chobham armor” was built in the 1970s with parts from Chieftain Mk. 5 battle tanks.
