Serrapeptase is an enzyme originally obtained from Serratia marcescens, a gram-negative opportunistic pathogen isolated from the intestine of the silkworm Bombyx mori L. It has been used in clinical practices for the treatment of inflammation, breast disease, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, sinusitis, hepatitis, lung disorders, and uterine fibroids. Serrapeptase is majorly used as a therapeutic for inflammation, to which it has been proven effective by many studies. It was first used for its anti-inflammatory effects in Japan in 1957. Serrapeptase bind with COX 1 and COX 2, which are enzymes responsible for the production of various inflammatory mediators. Serrapeptase has low availability, which is why its required dosage is higher than a conventional anti-inflammatory drug. Serrapeptase must be used in combination with metal ions like zinc and manganese to increase its efficacy and stability. In Japan, it is not only used as an anti-inflammatory agent, but also as a mucolytic agent. One study has reported that serrapeptase could enhance clearance in patients with chronic airway disease. Moreover, it is also taken as an adjuvant of antibiotics because of its anti-biofilm property. Bacterial biofilms are structures synthesized by a community of bacteria to protect themselves from the attacks of the immune system and antibiotics or antimicrobial agents. Bacterial biofilms are more resistant to antimicrobial agents as compared to individual bacterial colonies, thus leading to antibiotic treatment failure. Serrapeptase is also known to dissolve blood clots and atherosclerotic plaques by breaking down fibrin and other dead and damaged tissues. Inside the arteries, serrapeptase can remove deposits of fatty substances, cholesterol, and cellular waste. Serrapeptase and Nattokinase are also taken together through oral administration for their protective effect against Alzheimer's disease. Serrapeptase and nattokinase are both proteolytic enzymes that can increase the expression levels of B-D-N-F and IGF-1. Moreover, these enzymes are also able to reduce amyloid aggregation, responsible for the disruption of cell function in neurons.
