At some point between 546 BC and 547 BC, Argos and Sparta fought a war known as the Battle of the 300 Champions.

Instead of committing entire armies, each sides decided to face off with 300 of their best soldiers.

Sparta had surrounded and conquered Thyrea's plain, according to Herodotus.
